Our mission
Power to the people who live here
We recognize that data centers exist — and we're not asking for them to disappear. We're asking for something reasonable: keep them at least 5 miles from homes, schools, families, and the communities where people live. Industrial data centers consume billions of gallons of water, draw enormous amounts of electricity, generate constant noise, and depress property values — all while creating very few local jobs.
Join Unite exists to change that equation. We connect affected residents with the organizing tools, legal resources, and national network they need to fight back — and win.
Community first
Every decision we make is grounded in what's best for the people who actually live near these facilities — not investors, not tech companies, not politicians.
Radical transparency
We publish our finances, our tactics, and our wins and losses. Organizing works best when everyone can see what's happening and why.
Long-term thinking
We're not here for a single campaign. We're building the infrastructure for communities to protect themselves from extractive development for decades to come.
Nonpartisan action
Data center impacts cross every political line. We work with anyone who shares our commitment to community health, environmental protection, and democratic accountability.
Our team
The people behind Join Unite
We're a small, distributed team of organizers and advocates. Most of us got involved because a data center came to our own neighborhood.
Mikayla Llanos
Co-Manager
Community organizer and co-founder of Join Unite. Mikayla has been on the front lines of residential data center fights since the first proposals arrived in her neighborhood.
Tara Miller
Co-Manager
Tara brings years of grassroots campaign experience to Join Unite, helping chapters across the country build the coalitions they need to be heard at the zoning table.
Gary Zimmerman
Board Secretary
Gary keeps the organization running with careful attention to governance, records, and accountability — making sure our work is as transparent as we ask developers to be.
Open seat
Board Treasurer
We are actively seeking a Treasurer to join our board. If you have financial management experience and a passion for community advocacy, we'd love to hear from you.
Our coalition
A growing coalition
Join Unite works alongside a growing network of environmental, civic, and community organizations who share our commitment to accountable development. Our coalition is expanding — reach out if your organization wants to stand with us.
